Immigrants account for nearly all of the growth in the city’s older adult population, with New York City housing one out of every ten older immigrants in the country.
60 percent of immigrant seniors in New York have limited English proficiency, with 94 percent of Korean seniors, 92 percent of Chinese seniors, and 91 percent of Russian seniors speaking English poorly, according to a study. 62 percent of immigrant seniors in New York City live alone or with a spouse, compared to 83 percent of Chinese seniors.
When it comes to services, DFTA must take care to include an immigrant-in-everything focus; providers must not only speak the language of the seniors they are serving, but also possess cultural soft skills; this would allow service providers to reach immigrant seniors where they are.
