Robotics to Enable Older Adults to Remain Living at Home
Given the rapidly aging population, interest in robots to help older people stay at home is growing. We conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature on the use of robots in aged care, and the findings revealed that robotics can help older healthy people and people with disabilities stay independent.
Rapid population ageing is occurring, with many older adults preferring to remain at home, putting them at risk of falls and injuries. There is a need for smart technology development and access to monitor and maintain health and wellbeing. Robotic technologies can also complement current health care service provision by monitoring old people.
What is the range of robotic devices available to enable older people to remain mobile, independent, and safe? And what is the evidence demonstrating that robotic devices are effective in enabling independent living in community-dwelling older people?
The studies that have provided evidence of technologies assisting older people are listed in Table 1, and Figure 1 depicts the breakdown of articles based on the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, with the main reason for exclusion being that the articles were descriptive and did not contain data providing evidence of effectiveness, feasibility, or validity.
